How much does newborn photography cost in San Diego?

Across San Diego, session fees typically run $200–$400 before prints or digital images, with most families spending $1,500–$2,000 total once a full package is added. With Melissa Madden Photography, it works in two steps: a $250 session fee, then a collection you choose after seeing your images — Digital only ($500–$950), or Print + Digital ($750–$2,500) with a credit toward heirloom products.

That investment gets you more than a photo shoot. Melissa has photographed San Diego families since 2011, bringing a background in design and psychology to every session, and is known among past clients as "the baby whisperer" for her calm, confident handling of newborns having an off day. Every session is full-service, from consultation to final product, in English or Spanish, so what you walk away with isn't just images, but the version of your baby's first days you'll still be showing them twenty years from now.

When should I book a newborn photographer?

Most book during the second trimester, but is best to book popular photographers as early as 3 months before due date.

What's the best age to photograph a newborn?

Between 7 days and 3 weeks after birth. Babies this young sleep deeply and can be settled into poses without waking up. After about two weeks, they start stretching out, staying more alert, and it might take longer to settle them into a pose.

Where will my newborn photos take place?

In the comfort of your own home or at the studio in Hillcrest. If we do a lifestyle session at home, we’ll work in special places throughout your home, including the nursery you spent so much time building.

Studio or in-home session — what's the difference?

Studio sessions offer full control over lighting, props, and temperature, which matters a lot for sleepy newborn poses. In-home sessions capture your family in your own space and skip the car ride with a brand-new baby.

What actually happens during a newborn session?

Sessions usually run 2–4 hours, which surprises a lot of first-time parents. The extra time isn't padding, it's built in for feeding breaks, soothing, and diaper changes on baby's schedule, not the clock's. A good photographer works around your baby's mood rather than rushing them into a pose.

What if my baby is fussy?

Experienced photographers use white noise, gentle swaddling, and a warm room to mimic the womb, plus feeding and soothing breaks whenever baby needs them. Nothing is forced. If a pose isn't working for your baby that day, a good photographer will move on rather than push it.

What should I look for when choosing a newborn photographer?

A few honest questions go a long way: how many newborn sessions have they done, what's their safety training, and does their editing style match your vision? Ask to see a couple of full session galleries (not just their portfolio highlights) so you know what a real session with them looks like.

Whether we shoot at my Hillcrest studio, set up like a cozy, light-filled bedroom, or in the comfort of your own San Diego home, my approach as a newborn photographer stays the same: capture what life with a brand-new baby actually feels like. Their tiny features. The way their whole hand wraps around just one of your fingers. How impossibly good they smell. How perfectly they fit into the crook of your arm. The way a big brother suddenly looks enormous standing next to this new tiny person.

My style is posed but unposed newborn photography, never forced, just organic movement and plenty of close-up detail shots. For the best newborn photos, I recommend booking your newborn session when baby is one to three weeks old, while they're still sleepy enough to curl naturally.

The result is real, lasting art you'll treasure from your newborn photography session. Sessions run two to three hours, built around baby's feeding and diaper needs. I've been called a baby whisperer more times than I can count as a San Diego newborn photographer, and it's a title I wear proudly. Just as much care goes into looking after you, the parents, too.
