We are pretty lucky to be close with our families, there’s not a lot of us, but I think that’s why it works. When Mark and I got married, our families came together and became one. We all like each other and care for each other, genuinely. Mr. Dave, Mark’s youngest cousin, is the smartest, sweetest 10 year old boy I know. He has been in Nicolas’ life since Nicolas was a few months old, and Nicolas idolizes Dave. Dave is The Man. There’s no day that goes by without a casual mention of Dave.
Dave came over for a sleepover last weekend, and upon finding out that Mr. D was coming, Nicolas couldn’t hide his excitement. My house was a disaster because our kitchen cabinets had been re-painted and everything that belong inside the cabinets was in the garage. I was honestly dreading having to put everything back. Well, to my surprise, Mr. D volunteered to help, and Nicolas followed his lead. Prime example of “leading by example”, right? Both kids worked together to bring most of the stuff inside and helped me put it away in the cabinets. Nicolas was so excited to help and show Dave how he was strong like him. Mr. D was patient and helped Nicolas with the heavy stuff. I was so thankful to have Dave at that moment, seriously. Not only did he made a dreadful task fun, but he also taught my kiddo a lesson of working together as a team and helping someone in need.
The next morning, Dave woke up earlier than Nicolas. Usually, Nicolas will run to our bed as soon as he wakes up, but not that morning. Dave was already reading a book in the living room, so all Mark and I heard was Nicolas waking up and running, literally running, to the living room to meet Dave. Later on after breakfast, I found the kids having some fun in my room, and being the photographer that I am, I couldn’t pass on this awesome moment to capture some memories for them. The light wasn’t the best, hence the grainy images, but I was still able to capture some awesome emotions in all of their little faces.
I couldn’t be happier to have Dave as a role model for my little ones, especially Nicolas. Dave has such a gentle soul, and he is wicked smart. He has so much patience with Nicolas and has no problem coming down to his level so they can have things in common and play together. Dave is so good with both kids, he truly is like a big brother to them. He makes me wish we had an older child, but then again, maybe Nicolas will be the 10 year old boy with an 18 month old baby sibling and a 5 year old sister… who knows what life has in store for us.
